BOLT101-Module1

During Module 1, It has been great, reading, interacting and pondering about the role of technology in teaching and learning. From my initial 1-minute video to this post, it is amazing how much we rely on technology, different kinds of technologies to make things to work. Hopefully technology is not on the way of the purposes for which technology is being used as the channel or mechanism to accomplish something. I think there is a place for technology, and its value is in truly making technology transparent, to the point of almost not being aware that technology is being used.

For ages people have deviced how to best use new ways to accomplish the same purposes. And technology has truly been remarkable in helping us do things better, and quicker. When it comes to the classroom, technology can enhance or disrupt the teaching and learning environment. For me this module has been about reflecting how I best use technology to enhance or facilitate the teaching and learning process. There is definitely a place for technology, just as there is a place for the facilitator or instructor. I think the inspiration in teaching and learning typically comes from instructors and not from technology. This is an element that is, the human factor, that may never be completely removed  from the learning context.

  1. I enjoyed reading your reflections, Oscar. The point that you make about the human factor never being completely removed from the learning context is one that I agree with. While I have learned a lot from a lot of different types of teachers, the ones that have taught me the most were the people that I felt the most connected with. The people that have been able to "challenge with care" have been those that have influenced my greatest investment as a learner. Technology will continue to develop and as it does we should to. But, I've never connected with a computer the same way I've connected with a person. However, I believe the person using the computer (technology) well has greater potential as a teacher than they would have without it.

    1. Great point, Aaron. I have also appreciated mentors whom have inspired me and challenged me at the same time.

  2. I think this is a really good point - "I think there is a place for technology, and its value is in truly making technology transparent, to the point of almost not being aware that technology is being used."

I like technology, and I like seeing it used well in teaching and learning. However, I can also think of times when the technology has been a big distraction in the teaching/learning environment...especially when it doesn't work like it is supposed to.

    1. Perhaps, the greatest distractor, when technology does not work.

  3. If you have a blended class you can still maintain that personal relationship and responsiveness. In a fully on line class it would be more difficult to develop that relationship. For some people it may be possible but how can you ever be sure someone is fully honest and open if you are just using technology?
